The additional sand filter provided anaerobic situation favorable for removal of NO₃⁻ up to 68.41 ± 7.63%. The maximum power and current densities achieved in the system were 33.14 mW m⁻³ and 235.0 mA m⁻³, respectively.

英文摘要：The aim of this study was to improve the efficiency of traditional proton exchange membranes by replacement using ceramic membranes with microalgae cathodes under various magnetic fields (MFs) of 100-300 mT in a ceramic microbial fuel cell (CMFC). The experimental results showed that the power generation can be enhanced by 61% when implementing a 200 mT MF. The application of a higher MF intensity, up to 200 mT, increased the electric charge generation yet decreased it with a higher MF value. Additionally, the MF had the ability to improve the power density of the CMFC, and a maximum power density of 35.9 mW m⁻² and maximum current density of 158.7 mA m⁻² were achieved with the 200 mT MF. Moreover, biocathode maintains a stable pH value that obtained more microalgae biomass by 200 mT MF stimulation. Further work will be focused on optimizing the appropriate MF intensity along with the capacity of carbon dioxide (CO₂) absorption by microalgae in CMFC.

Combination of microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology with microalgal-based process in MFC-PBR (photobioreactor) systems could reduce greenhouse gases emissions from wastewater treatment facilities, capturing CO₂ emitted from industrial facilities or directly from the atmosphere. Microalgae production could enhance recovery of wastewater-embedded resources. Two system MFC-PBR configurations were tested and compared with a control MFC, under different operating conditions, using both synthetic and agro-industrial wastewater as anolytes. COD removal efficiency (ηCOD) and energy production were monitored during every condition tested, reaching ηCOD values up to 99%. Energy recovery efficiency and energy losses were also evaluated. The system equipped with microalgal biocathode proved to be capable to efficiently treat real wastewater, surpassing the effectiveness of the control unit under specific conditions. Oxygen provided by the algae improves the overall energy balance of this system, which could be further enhanced by many possible resources recovery opportunities presented by post-processing of the cathodic effluent.

英文摘要：Settled algae may be used as nutrient for macrophyte establishment, but also can induce marked macrophyte decline during deep anaerobic decomposition. Sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) may promote the utilization of algae-derived nutrients and relieve bio-toxicity from settled algae to submerged macrophytes, thus facilitating plant production. To test these hypotheses, a 62-day comparative study was designed and conducted in microcosms with the following six treatments: control (open-circuit SMFC), plant (open-circuit SMFC with plants), algae (open-circuit SMFC with algae), algae-plant (open-circuit SMFC with algae and plants), algae-SMFC (closed-circuit SMFC with algae), and algae-plant-SMFC (closed-circuit SMFC with algae and plants). The results showed that the presence of Hydrilla verticillata improved the power generation of SMFCs when algae were used as substrates during the whole operation. The decomposition of sedimented algae experienced two periods since the injection. During the slight decomposition period (14-38 day), the algal retention in sediments was enhanced by H. verticillata as a nutrient source. Nitrogen (N) assimilation in plant shoots was facilitated under electrogenesis due to a simultaneous increase of algae-derived dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and ammonium (NH₄⁺) in the water column. At the end of the 38th day, the biomass of H. verticillata were increased by 21.4% and 52.3%, respectively, in the algae-plant and algae-plant-SMFC, compared with that in plant treatment. Obvious NH₄⁺-stress was exerted on H. verticillata during the following intense algal decomposition period (38-62 day). Compared with shoots, roots of H. verticillata were more sensitive to the biotoxicity of algae-derived NH₄⁺. The electrogenetic process diverted the degradation pathway from acetoclastic methanogenesis to electrogenesis via redox cycle, resulting in delayed algal decomposition in algae-SMFC treatment. In addition, electrogenesis enhanced the removal of algae-derived N. As a result, NH₄⁺ toxicity to plant roots was effectively alleviated, and sedimented algae served as a stable nutrient source for plant development. Stable transfer rate of algae-derived N from sediments to plant roots was observed, while the assimilation rate of algae-derived N from water column to plant shoots showed a constant increase in the algae-plant-SMFC treatment. Electrogenesis enhanced N-fixing capacity belonged to rhizosphere of H. verticillata, evidenced by greater enrichment of some plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs), including Bradyrhizobium, Mycobacterium, Paenibacillus, Mesorhizobium, and Roseomonas in the algae-plant-SMFC treatment. At the end of the experiment, marked increases in the production of H. verticillata in algae-plant-SMFC were observed, with 90.1% and 32.8%, respectively, when compared with algae-plant and plant treatments (p < 0.05). SMFC application could be used as a strategy to promote the growth of submerged macrophytes in algae-rich sediments.

Although MFCs that utilize microalgae to provide a self-supporting oxygen (O₂) supply at the cathode have been well discussed, those with microalgae at the anode as an active biomass for treating wastewater and producing electrons are still poorly studied and understood. Here, we demonstrated a bilgewater treatment using single- and double-chamber microalgal fuel cells (SMAFC and DMAFC) capable of generating energy with a novel microalgal strain (Chlorella sorokiniana) that was initially isolated from oily wastewater. Compared to previous MFC studies using green algae, relatively high voltage output (151.3-160.1 mV, 71.3-83.4 mV m⁻² of power density) was observed in the SMAFC under O₂ controlled systems (i.e., acetate addition or light/dark cycle). It was assumed that, under the O₂ depletion, alternative electron acceptors such as bicarbonate may be utilized for power generation. A DMAFC showed better power density (up to 23.9%) compared to the SMAFC due to the separated cathode chamber which fully utilizes O₂ as an electron acceptor. Both SMAFC and DMAFC removed 67.2-77.4% of soluble chemical oxygen demands (SCOD) from the synthetic bilgewater. This study demonstrates that the application of algae-based MFCs is a feasible strategy to treat oil-in-water emulsion while generating electricity.

Compared with conventional fermentation system (CFS), microbial electrolysis cell-based EFS (MEC-EFS) and microbial fuel cell-based EFS (MFC-EFS) were investigated for the performance while treating microalgae Nannochloropsis sp. Results indicated that MEC-EFS presented much higher first-order decomposition rate coefficients of carbohydrates and proteins (1.212/d and 0.951/d) than those of CFS (0.615/d and 0.794/d) and MFC-EFS (0.518/d and 0.415/d). Compared with MFC-EFS, MEC-EFS showed better electrochemical performance (2.17 A/m³ vs. 0.95 A/m³). Moreover, MEC-EFS reached the highest extracted lipid to biomass ratio (43.3%), followed by MFC-EFS (32.3%) and CFS (27.7%). By strengthened microbial biohydrogenation, MEC-EFS and MFC-EFS had higher saturated fatty acids ratio (78.8% and 70.6%) than that of CFS (56.1%). For MEC-EFS, enriched Ruminococcus and Geobacter in anodic biofilm might contribute to favorable biohydrogenation and electrochemical performance.

This hybrid system not only benefits to enhance the CO₂ sequestration rate of photobioreactor but also has the potential to be served as the power source in a confined space.

Here we constructed a dual-membrane cylinder photo-microbial fuel cell (DCP-MFC), equipped with cation and anion exchange membranes, to produce electricity and microalgae, and to remove both organics and minerals. Results show that this cell displayed higher electric generation capacity, of 671.6 mV and 0.39 W/m², during 1000 h of stable running, than the control cell, of 601.2 mV and 0.31 W/m². Microalgal biomass increased from 2.90 to 3.80 g/L owing to dissolved oxygen scavenging. Nitrogen recovery increased from 0 to 92.6%. Energy yield increased from 2.33 kJ for the control MFC to 118.28 kJ for microalgal cultivation, and to 155.21 kJ for the DCP-MFC. Microbial community analysis revealed that nitrate was mostly converted into nitrite by denitrifying bacteria in the anode chamber, then used by microalgae in the cathode chamber of the DCP-MFC.

The sDFMFC exhibited a considerably enhanced energy recovery owing to simultaneous H₂/carboxylic acids (CAs) production by DF and electricity production by MFC consuming CAs. The co-production of H₂ and electricity was confirmed by a time course of CAs concentration in sDFMFC. An excellent energy recovery of 17.3% was obtained from S. japonica with H₂ yield of 110 mL/g-VS and maximum power density of 1.82 W/m². The sDFMFC showed a diverse microbial community for a desirable microbial conversion of organic substrates. The results indicate that sDFMFC can be a promising single reactor process to produce H₂ and electricity from various biomass feedstock with considerable cost savings while ensuring the strength of the individual DF and MFC process.

英文摘要：The cathodic microalgae-based MFC converts the nutrients within wastewater and produces oxygen as oxygen supply for cathodic reactions, leading to the reduction of aeration cost. Continuous energy supplies are secured via the studied technology to solve overloaded nutrient and toxic substances discharge into environment, in a sustainable approach. Electricity and biomass produced are sellable as bioenergy and bioproducts, having the potential to generate more income compared to traditional MFC. As result, Chlorella sp. G29-5 has the best performance of nutrient removal, growth and electricity generation compared to other microalgae strains, using immobilized fructose sludge as anode. Immobilized anaerobic inoculum showed higher efficiency on electricity generation compared to suspended anaerobic inoculum. This technology has fully utilized bacteria from sludge and swine manure as microalgae nutrient and generating electricity as output. Cost estimation of other MFC has been included as a reference compared to the current technologies. The capital cost per power generated for this study is $490.46/mW, which is comparatively higher than other systems without concerning the extra income of microalgae biomass generated and nutrient recovered. Replacing expensive catalyst with microalgae is potential to reduce production cost required for MFC and treat wastewater, benefitting the wastewater treatment and power sectors. Consumption of nutrients by microalgae leads to efficient COD removal and aids in controlling severe soil and water pollution.

英文摘要：The aim of this work was to compare the performance of the two types of photosynthetic microbial fuel cells (MFCs) fed with real wastewater- one having plant Canna indica (PMFC) and the other having alga Chlorella vulgaris (AMFC) at the cathode. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphate, and nitrate removal stood at 57.16% 88.81%, 59.82% for PMFC and 65.27%, 95.59%, 66.61% for the AMFC. While AMFC was slightly superior in water treatment, the power output was 6 times higher in PMFC (22.76 mW m⁻²) than the AMFC (3.64 mW m⁻²). The biomass growth was good in both systems, with biomass productivity of 0.031 Kg m⁻³ day⁻¹ in AMFC and a leaf area index of 0.006 in PMFC. The study's findings suggest that PMFCs are equally good or even better than AMFCs when the goal is simultaneous water treatment and power generation.

About 86.2% of the Cu²⁺ was removed in the first cathodic chamber, and the remaining Cu²⁺ was largely eliminated by algal uptake, contributing to an overall Cu²⁺ removal rate of 99.9% across the whole system. The nitrogen removal rate reached 79% in the system. The majority of the ammonium was assimilated by algae, and nitrogen oxides formed during the light period were denitrified at the cathode in the dark period. The variation in electrode potentials indicated that the cathode and anode potentials not only depended on the respective substrate concentrations, but also affected each other. The influence of algae on the microbial communities was greater than that of Cu²⁺ or the system structure. Devosia, Thauera, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter and Flavobacterium may influence nitrogen removal, while Delftia, Thauera and Pseudomonas may play an important role in power generation. The present study has developed a practical method for removing pollutants from the wastewater containing heavy metals.

The electrodes comprise of nanoparticles (NPs) of CuO/MnO₂/Fe₃O₄ mixed with activated graphite. The study compares the performance of composite electrodes with Pt coated C-cloth. The graphite/CuO supported highest power & current density, algal growth, and electrocatalytic activity while Pt/C electrode failed in all aspects as algae ceased to grow in the system. The graphite/CuO cathode led to 6 W/m³ of power density, 25 A/m3 of current density, and 0.256 d⁻¹ as a specific algal growth rate. The composite graphite/CuO electrode showed better catalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the cathode. Furthermore, the Pt was found out to be toxic for the algal growth. Hence, the Pt-MFC exhibited low power output due to failure of cathodic algal growth. In addition to this, the GC-MS analysis of FAME (Obtained from cathodic algae) revealed the optimum presence of both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, indicating its suitability for biodiesel application.

In this study, microalgae and pyrite were co-pyrolyzed (P/MC) and then coated on carbon felt (CF) with PTFE as a binder. P/MC modification resulted in increased electroactive surface area, superhydrophilicity and higher biocompatibility. Besides, the P/MC-CF anode reduced the charge transfer resistance from 35.1 Ω to 11.4 Ω. The highest output voltage and the maximum power density of the MFC equipped with the P/MC-CF anode were 657 mV and 1266.7 mW/m², respectively, which were much larger than that of the MFC with the CF anode (530 mV, 556.7 mW/m²). The P/MC-CF anode also displayed higher columbic efficiency (39.41%) than the CF anode (32.37%). This work suggests that pyrolyzing microalgae with pyrite is a promising method to enhance the performance of MFCs.

In this work, development of a novel cathodic process with in situ nitritation via microalgal photosynthesis during the light period is reported for achieving shortcut nitrogen removal (SNR) from ammonium-rich wastewater. Moreover, a tubular low-cost ceramic membrane was used to separate and recycle the microalgal-bacterial biomass to the cathode compartment during the continuous operation. The influence of NH₄⁺ concentration and ratio of chemical oxygen demand to total nitrogen on the MPMFC performance was examined. Denitritation under dark and anoxic conditions occurred due to denitrifying bacteria (DNB) subsequent to nitritation under light and aerobic conditions by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in the consortia. Final concentrations of NH₄⁺ and NO₂⁻ in the effluent of 0.10 mg NH₄⁺-L⁻¹ and 0.02 mg NO₂⁻-L⁻¹, respectively, were obtained using MPMFC which resulted in a nitrogen removal efficiency of 99 ± 0.5%. The maximum electricity production achieved using the MPMFC was 56 ± 0.1 mA. This study demonstrated that combining microalgal photosynthesis, nitritation and denitritation in the cathode compartment of MPMFC is advantageous for avoiding the cost due to external aeration and organic carbon source necessary for ammonium removal as well as utilization of NO₂⁻ or NO₃⁻ as an electron acceptor.

This study assessed the performance of an algae-PMFC continuously operated for 120 days to treat and demineralize real-field slaughterhouse wastewater associated with bioenergy generation. Mixed bacterial species including Pseudomonas and Bacillus as the dominant species were used to inoculate the anodic chamber, whereby Chlorella vulgaris microalgae were used in the cathodic section. The results showed that maximum removal efficiency of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonium ions from the actual slaughterhouse wastewater were 99.65% and 70%, respectively. Maximum and average recorded power output were 543.28 and 391.42 mW/m², respectively. Dense growth of both; the biofilm in the anodic compartment as well as Chlorella vulgaris microalgae in the cathodic compartment were clearly observed after 120-days operation. The promising results of this potential approach encourage the application of PMFC for the treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater.

英文摘要：Algae-assisted microbial desalination cells represent a sustainable technology for low-energy fresh water production in which microalgae culture is integrated into the system to enhance oxygen reduction reaction in the cathode chamber. However, the water production (desalination rate) is low compared to conventional technologies (i.e., reverse osmosis and/or electrodialysis), as biocathodes provide low current generation to sustain the desalination process. In this sense, more research efforts on this topic are necessary to address this bottleneck. Thus, this study provides analysis, from the electrochemical point of view, on the cathode performance of an algae-assisted microbial desalination cell (MDC) using Chlorella vulgaris. Firstly, the system was run with a pure culture of Chlorella vulgaris suspension in the cathode under conditions of an abiotic anode to assess the cathodic behavior (i.e., cathode polarization curves in light-dark conditions and oxygen depletion). Secondly, Geobacter sulfurreducens was inoculated in the anode compartment of the MDC, and the desalination cycle was carried out. The results showed that microalgae could generate an average of 9-11.5 mg/L of dissolved oxygen during the light phase, providing enough dissolved oxygen to drive the migration of ions (i.e., desalination) in the MDC system. Moreover, during the dark phase, a residual concentration of oxygen (ca. 5.5-8 mg/L) was measured, indicating that oxygen was not wholly depleted under our experimental conditions. Interestingly, the oxygen concentration was restored (after complete depletion of dissolved oxygen by flushing with N₂) as soon as microalgae were exposed to the light phase again. After a 31 h desalination cycle, the cell generated a current density of 0.12 mA/cm² at an efficiency of 60.15%, 77.37% salt was removed at a nominal desalination rate of 0.63 L/m²/h, coulombic efficiency was 9%, and 0.11 kWh/m³ of electric power was generated. The microalgae-assisted biocathode has an advantage over the air diffusion and bubbling as it can self-sustain a steady and higher concentration of oxygen, cost-effectively regenerate or recover from loss and sustainably retain the system’s performance under naturally occurring conditions. Thus, our study provides insights into implementing the algae-assisted cathode for sustainable desalination using MDC technology and subsequent optimization.

英文摘要：The marine algae Chaetoceros contains hexadecatrienoic acid, which suppresses methanogen development and improves the coulombic efficiency (CE) of microbial fuel cells (MFC). To inhibit the methanogens, optimum concentration of marine algae should be added to the anaerobic sludge to enhance the performance of MFC. A varying concentration of Chaetoceros ranging from 1 to 20 mg/mL was carried out for pretreatment of an anaerobic-mix consortium to suppress methanogens. MFC inoculated with pretreated anaerobic sludge with 10 mg/mL Chaetoceros showed a maximum power density of 21.62 W/m³ and a maximum CE of 37.25%, which was considerably higher than the treatment with other concentrations. At 10 mg/mL concentration, Tafel analysis of the anode in the MFC showed a higher exchange current density of 66.35 mA/m² and a lower charge transfer resistance of 0.97 Ω.m², revealing higher bio-electrochemical activity. The performance of MFC improved when the concentration of Chaetoceros was increased up to 10 mg/mL, but then began to decline as the concentration increased further. Thus, the optimum dose of Chaetoceros to be added in the mix-anaerobic consortium to optimize the power performance of MFC was determined, which can be carried out in scaled-up MFCs.
