This Drama is an Epic Masterpiece

史诗级杰作——《后宫甄嬛传》

This is an amazing drama; an epic masterpiece. It might not be for everyone, but as a palace drama, it did a great job. To have 76 episodes and not have one episode drag is truly an excellent job. Some dramas cant even go 20 episodes without getting slow and boring in the middle.

这是一部令人称奇的剧作，也是一部史诗级杰作。虽然不是所有人都能欣赏它的美，但作为一部宫廷剧，它已经达到了相当的高度。全剧共76集之长，难得的是没有一集拖沓。相比之下，有些连续剧如果不拖剧情充数，连20集都凑不到。

The writers, directors, producers etc. of this drama knew where they were going from the beginning and crafted a very well done drama. The acting was excellent across the board, and each character played their role splendidly, whether they were the good guys or the villains.

Zhen Huan - when she first came into the palace and was scared, she was believable. When she fell in love with the emperor and was naive about palace life, she was believable; when she fell out of love with him that was believable also; and when she became cold and calculative like all the other palace women that was believable too. Interestingly, I thought she had more chemistry with the older emperor than with the 17th prince.

甄嬛——作为全局主角，当她甫一入宫，为宫闱生活而胆战心惊的时候，她的情感是真实可信的；当她与皇帝陷入爱河，对宫中生活还抱有一份纯真的时候，她的情感也是真实可信的；当她与皇帝断情绝爱时，当她变得冷酷、工于算计，变得和后宫所有女人一样时，她的情感依旧是真实可信的。有趣的是，我认为她和皇帝间的感情要比和十七王爷的更深。

The 17th prince affair looked like a fairy tale. In a drama fraught with such realism, the 17th prince affair just looked too idealistic, too imaginary. 17th Prince was like a story book character, the fairytale prince on a white horse coming to save the damsel in distress, he didnt seem to have the nuances of the other characters in the drama. Thats not to say I didnt enjoy or appreciate the inclusion of such a moral character in the drama. Because, lets face it this drama needed some positivity among the rampant scheming, murders and evilness.

和十七爷的那段感情太像童话了。在一部基调如此现实的电视剧里，十七爷的爱情故事显得太格格不入了，也太虚无缥缈了。十七爷本身很像那种童话里的王子了，会骑着白马救少女与困苦之中的那种，全剧没有一个角色能与这个特殊人物进行比照。这并不是说我认为这个角色的存在是个败笔，毕竟这部电视剧需要一抹亮色，在应接不暇的算计、谋害和罪恶之中也需要有缓冲的地带。

Consort Hua - wow, I dont know who this actress is, but boy did she sell her character. She was a sad and lonely woman, whose love turned into obsession and teetering closer to madness. She acted with every fiber of her being - her eyes, her expression, everything. Her crying scenes got you in the heart, even though she was evil, because you could see the lost and former sweet girl somewhere in there. Unlike Zhen Huan, who realized that loving a man who shouldnt be loved, would lead to her ruin, she never realized and it caused her to keep racing towards eventual doom.

华妃——哇噢，我还不知道那位演员是谁，但她真是把这个角色演活了。这是个悲哀而孤独的女人，她的爱意变成了执念和反复无常，最后趋向于疯狂。这位演员的表演注重到了每一个细节——她的眼神，她的表情，一切的一切。当她哭泣的时候，你即使知道她的邪恶，也不免为她感到伤心。因为你可以看出她内心的失落，也可以看出她曾经是怎样一个甜蜜可爱的女孩儿。她与甄嬛不一样，后者清醒的认识到爱上一个不该爱的人会将自己引向毁灭，而华妃从未明白这一点。在对这一切无知无觉的情况下，她像飞蛾扑火般一路向前，直至走向毁灭。

The Emperor - at first I didnt like the way he delivered his lines so brusquely. It was jarring almost like he was acting in a stage play than in a TV drama, but as time went on, I just assumed it was the way the emperor would speak - with finality and authority, with his every word never to be countered. I never really got his motivation, but he played the gray area well. He was an Emperor that kept the country together, during difficult times, but he also did a lot of bad things. He is an historical figure that some praise and some scorn. Other dramas like BBJX and Palace, gave him a sympathetic portrayal, but this drama showed his good and bad and left it to the audience to make the final judgment.

皇帝——一开始我并不喜欢他生硬说话方式，太沉重也太有压迫感了，就好像他是在演舞台剧而非电视剧似的。不过时间一长，我慢慢觉得这可能就是一个皇帝应有的腔调——这是一种用来决策和彰显权威的腔调，他说的每一个字都不容反驳。我还是不能完全理解这个人物的动机，不过演员将人物的灰色地带拿捏的非常好。这是一位在诸多困难之中，呕心沥血维护国家统一的帝王，但与此同时他也做了许多坏事。他的历史形象素来褒贬不一。在其他的电视剧，例如《步步惊心》和《宫》里，对雍正的刻画都已同情为主，但在这部剧同时展现了雍正好和坏的一面，将一切都留给观众做评判。

I truly enjoyed watching this drama, and wished it wouldnt end, so I could continue to savor and enjoy such a rich drama. I appreciated the director using a lot of location and outside shots, rather than filming primarily on sound stages and in studio. It lent a realism and naturalness to the drama that further heightened the feel of the drama and placed it above the current crop of Asian dramas. It reminded me more of older epic drama series, where no cost was spared and attention was given to every detail. The costumes, the colors, the sets, the behavior patterns, the number of extras used, everything was done on an epic scale. I hope there will be more dramas like this.

我真的真的非常喜欢这部电视剧，还曾一度希望它不会完结，这样我就能继续享受这样精彩的作品了。我还要赞美一下导演，全剧基本没有摄影棚内拍摄的部分，而代之以实景拍摄。这种做法使影像具有了一种现实和自然的风格，并将观影感受大大提升，超越了近期的各类亚洲电视剧。这让我想起了很多过去的史诗连续剧，它们往往不惜工本，力求尽善尽美。无论是服装、色彩，还是陈设、礼仪和姿态，乃至配饰的使用，每一样都是史诗范畴的。在此诚挚希望能有更多的人喜爱这部连续剧。

Usually called by their given name instead of whole name.
In Qing Dynasty, the maids in the Harem also came from Man. Some of them were even from royal families.
Some girls get eliminated in the Audition will be selected to be some higher ranking maids.
When maids get older, they will be released from the Harem and go back to hometown to get married or so. They usually get respects when they came back for the experience in the forbidden city. Also some of them will stay in the Harem. Senior or experienced maids will be called Gu Gu (Same meaning with Auntie).

宫女一般以赐名称呼，而不是她们的本来名字。在清代，后宫的宫女一般也是满族人，甚至有一些人出身皇室。

7. Some Facts
1) Maiden names & titles
Newly selected pincess consorts will carry their maiden name as their names and family names as titles. But the emperor can also give (bestow) a name (a title) to them. For example, Zhen Huan is supposed to be called Lingering Zhen. when the emperor name her Smile, she is hence called LIngering Smile. But she wont change her last name after marriage. She will refer to herself as Zhen Huan or Huan er.
Two main ethnic group: Man (满) and Han (汉). Man was the ruling class. But Han was the majority. So the harmony between Man and Han is important for the emperor. In the Harem, diversity is important. In Qing Dynasty, men of Han would shave their heads like men of Man did. But women of Han could keep their Han style clothes and hairstyle.
Also many Man noble classes will have Han family names. (Kinda like translation) For example, the empress, Zhu Yixiu. Zhu is her Han family name. Her real family name is Niuhulu.

名位和封号
刚刚入宫的妃嫔会以她们家族的名字作为封号，但皇帝也会给授予妃嫔封号。比如，甄嬛本来应该叫Lingering Zhen，但是皇帝给她赐名为Smile，所以她此后一直被称作Lingering Smile。不过在结婚之后她并不会改掉自己的姓氏，相反，她一直称自己为“甄嬛”或“嬛儿”。

I think it would be faster if you learned chinese. Being bilingual does not make us slaves. It would take months to sub the whole 75 episodes, if someone did this as a full time job...not to mention volunteers.
Subbers dont have to do anything for you...Ive already seen this drama, I dont need to break it down second by second.
People who have never helped on viki have no concept of how long this takes.

还抱怨字幕配得慢，你要是学过中文不就“快”了？别人会两种语言就活该做牛做马啦？翻译75集，多么大的工程，就算是全职干这个也得要几周吧…更不用说人家是义务翻译
人家字幕组没有义务为你做什么…我以前看过这部剧，所以不需要一点点的看。
某些人从来就没有为字幕组做过什么，根本不知道人家要花多少时间。

I was wondering if anyone has seen the subbed DVD version of this drama and if they would recommend buying it. I am worried because sometimes the English subbed versions are not of good quality.
Also, considering the different Chinese Historical Dramas, would you recommend this one for purchase. I havent seen one episode of this drama, but I heard it was highly popular.

Ok I think I can get the english subs and put them on here. Although $100 is a lot for a drama, I think most people would agree that the collective time contributors would have to put in to finish segmenting & subbing the whole series, and the associated stress, is worth a heck of a lot more than $100.
I might need some technical help putting the episodes on here though

I saw thethe subs online and they was 109.00 dollars that is alot of money for a drama.I admit this is a great drama but I can think of other ways to spend my hard earned cash

I havent heard about the subbed DVD version. Id recommend you watch a few episodes first to see how you like it before committing thinking about buying a DVD. I highly recommend Zhen Huan but its also not the drama for everyone. It all depends on what kind of drama you like!

我从没听说过市面上有字幕版DVD，我可以推荐你先看几部剧，你可以看了之后再考虑买不买。个人力推甄嬛，不过不是所有人都看得了它。这个要看你喜欢哪种类型的片子啦！

it all depends were you buy it from , i baought a copy of mystery in the palace in ebay it said the english subs were good and in most parts they are , it has the odd few typos and spelling mistakes but nothing that you cant wrap your head around.
i owuld recommended that you watch a few episodes here to see if you like it or not then you can go out and buy your own copy.

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but i was wondering if any of the viewers, subs,segmentors have ever watched the drama "War and Beauty" ? is it a good drama worth buying a copy ?

War and Beauty I am not familiar with, but one of my favorite older dramas is Wrong Bridal Sedan Chair, but Right Bridegroom. Its much more light hearted and completely different than Zhen Huan. Two brides get mixed up when they stop at a temple and because of financial reasons and their families honor they cant just reveal the mix-up. Then it follows how they deal with the intrique and mystery in their new homes and fall in love with their new husbands. I would like to see it on viki, but so far the only place I know to find it is on youtube.

《金枝欲孽》我不太熟悉，不过我最喜欢的一部早期电视剧是《上错花轿嫁对郎》。这部剧轻松愉快，和甄嬛传是两个感觉。故事讲得是两位新娘在一座庙里歇脚，结果被人弄混了。出于经济原因和家族荣耀感，她们只能保守住这个秘密。之后她们分别卷入了新家庭中的阴谋和秘密中，并与她们的新丈夫陷入爱河。我其实很想在VIKI上看，不过好像只有youtube上才有这片。

War and Beauty is very similar to this one in terms of plot. I thought it was okay but I wouldnt buy it.
金枝欲孽在阴谋方面和甄嬛很像，我觉得金枝欲孽还算可以，不过我是不会买的

OMG, Do I hate her the most. I know that is ridiculous, considering some of the other women are murderous pyschopaths, but her actions are so unjustified. Because, she has self esteem issues and jelousy issues, she allows herself to be a pawn. I am not done yet, so I dont know what happens to her, but boy I hope she is betrayed by her new friends, and suffers a terrible end. She caused 2 miscarriages, what a freaking BITCH. I dont use that word lightly, but every time I see her on screen, that word flashes in my mind.
Sorry, for the long rant, didnt know who to share this with, lol.

我的上帝啊，我最恨的就是她了。我知道这么说有点可笑，毕竟还有真正的脑残存在，可是没见过这样过分的家伙啊！出于那点自尊心和嫉妒心，她就把自己卖了。这还不算完，虽然我还不清楚她的结局是什么，不过我真心希望她会被自己的新同盟背叛，然后落得一个凄惨的结局，这人一手造成了两次流产，真tm是个**。我知道这话骂得有点粗了，不过每次在屏幕上看到这货，我脑子里就不停的闪现这个词。

thank god she is dead ! but it sure took a long while and she now knows what huan and lady fucha went thru when they lost their babies thru her stupid actions with her inferior complex ugh ! for any who is starting or half way thru the series the crazy woman survivees for quite a whie. !

感谢上帝，她最后死了！不过还要过好久…哈哈哈，看现在的剧情，她可算知道当时因为她的自卑心理而害得流产的甄嬛和富察是什么感受了吧！呸！刚开始看和只看了一半的同志们，任重道远，先忍一忍吧。

the subs for the rest of the episodes are on the last pages of videos with decent subs,
and viki.com is normally the first to have subs so good luck in finding any where else.

Good Luck. Viki.com is usually first in terms of Subtitles and translation. The only time it doesnt lead the pack is when there is license blocks and even then a lot of the script rips from other sites are gotten from translaters here on this site who have access to the content.

Definitely a MUST WATCH drama. Drama of the year I guess. :-) Very intense and realistic indeed, and the best costume I ever see.

She looks very much like her, but the quality of the video is to blurry for me to see if it is really her and the camera dont focus on her much since she is not one of the stars. The servan girl looks prettier than the main lead.

i wish i could help your team, but i do not know the language,i hope that you guys and girls will get more help, it can not be easy for 17 people to do a series with 76 episodes., this is a very good series not like that goong thing,
and it is not the other harem movies, i have watched this atleast 7 times all 76 episodes without subs, but with the subs it is even better,
maybe not to many people have heard of this series yet, so all i can do for you guys is spread the word, that this is a great show and worth watching, i dont think they had not even 1 episode were i got bored, so this is really really a good series,and trust me i have watched many, but this one is another good one. like part 2 to bbjx

可能很多人还没有听说过这部剧，在此力推甄嬛传！绝对是一部值得一看的好剧。甚至没有一集是无聊的，真真是精彩极了。相信我吧，我看过不少电视剧了，但这部确实不错。感觉很像《步步惊心》的续集。

I think theres an error in the description. Isnt the emperor supposed to be Yongzheng (Qianlongs father), and not Kang Xi? His brothers who fought against him for the throne are mentioned throughout.

我觉得是不是有个错误，皇帝应该是雍正而非康熙吧？他和自己的兄弟争夺皇位的故事可是从头到尾都被提到了的。

In ancient China, they put a paste made from a certain type of flower petals, ground up, on their nails, and wrap them in lilly pad leaves. This dyes their nails red/pink, and is an ancient form of nail polish/colouring.

在古代中国，人们会把某些花朵的花瓣捣成浆糊，然后涂抹在指甲上，用lilly pad 叶子卷起来。（这段不能确定，lilly pad不是稀烂的翔的意思吗？）这会把她们的手指甲染成粉色或红色，可谓是古代的指甲油。

This drama is so lovely, one of the best Chinese dramas, but sadly all the Chinese dramas on Vikii are subbed sooo slowly for some reason?
I hope the subbers have not dropped this project. Thank you for your hard work.
